With the new school year now underway, the Miami Police Department is stepping up to remind all parents, businesses, and commuters in the Central Grove area to keep a keen eye on the busy school zones here. With so many children walking to and from school each day, we’ve ensured that additional officers will be deployed to enforce strict adherence to the speed limit (effective Thursday, Aug. 15).
Within the Coconut Grove BID, expect congestion from 8 to 8:45 a.m. and between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. The first few days of the new school year are particularly hectic as new parents and students are learning the system, and it usually take about a week for everyone to get with the program. That being said, school pickup will always back up into the thoroughfares of the BID and surrounding neighborhoods during the afternoon pickup.
A Horse of a Different Color…
But I guarantee this isn’t a new problem! When Coconut Grove Elementary School, for instance, opened 113 years ago there was no doubt a line of horses up and down Grand Ave. causing a traffic jam. Fast forward a century, it’s no different today.
Please remember, the safety of the kids is our priority. They should feel safe to walk, bike, or drive to their schools without being in fear of being struck by traffic. We encourage everyone to remain patient – and please drive SLOWLY!
