Keeping Coconut Grove Clean, Safe and Welcoming

Recent operations activities underscore the BID’s proactive role in identifying and addressing infrastructure challenges, enhancing public safety, and maintaining the district’s appearance.

Leaf It Up to Us

Through ongoing monitoring of clogged storm drains and construction-related debris, BID Operations staff and the Block-by-Block (BBB) team are working to resolve issues before they escalate. By coordinating with City services and collaborating with contractors on mitigation measures, the BID remains committed to keeping streetscapes safe, functional, and welcoming for businesses, residents, and visitors alike.

Seasonal maintenance is also ramping up as the district experiences increased leaf fall. The BBB team is conducting regular sweeping and debris removal to prevent buildup on sidewalks and ensure a clean, safe pedestrian environment. Wet leaves can become especially slippery during and after rainfall, creating potential hazards.

At the same time, staff is closely monitoring debris accumulation linked to multiple construction sites throughout the district. While contractors install storm drain inlet protection and the City of Miami services drains three times per year, these measures are reinforced by the BID’s proactive Operations and BBB teams — helping ensure the Grove remains resilient, responsive, and well-managed year-round.

Power to the People

Among recent efforts, the team identified and reported a power outage affecting multiple streetlights at Grand Avenue and Elizabeth Street following nearby construction activity. Initial reports indicated one light was down; however, further inspection revealed that six additional lights had lost power. Because several of the affected fixtures fell outside the BID boundary, the issue was escalated to District 2 Constituent Liaison Javier Gonzalez to ensure the City was aware and could coordinate repairs if the problem persists.

Paver Savers

The BID Ops and BBB team also monitored and reported paver deterioration near the Rice Village area adjacent to the Mayfair garage, helping facilitate repairs. This type of proactive observation and reporting allows the BID and City partners to address infrastructure concerns quickly and maintain the district’s walkability and safety.

Night of the Iguana

Public cleanliness and sanitation remain a key operational priority. Following the region’s cold snap last month, the ambassador team handled the removal of dead iguanas at Main Highway and Charles Avenue near the Coconut Grove Playhouse, ensuring prompt sanitation and minimizing disruption to pedestrians and nearby businesses.

Under Pressure

In advance of the Coconut Grove Arts Festival weekend, the team also took the initiative to pressure-clean trash receptacles in front of Starbucks and around the Mayfair House & Gardens, removing sticky/stinky residue to ensure the district presented its best appearance for the tens of thousands of visitors expected during the event.

Do the Bump

Accessibility improvements were another focus area. The team has been working to identify worn sidewalk and crosswalk ADA tactile pads (“ADA bumps”) throughout the district and facilitate their replacement. Recent work included repairs at Virginia Street and Oak Avenue, coordinated with Safety Manager & ADA Coordinator Gloria Carvahal. She is with the City of Miami Risk Management Department. Some crossings required full panel replacements, while others involved brick repairs.

These activities underscore the BID’s ongoing commitment to proactive maintenance, rapid issue reporting and collaborative problem-solving with City departments. Through the daily work of the Block-by-Block ambassador team, the BID helps ensure Coconut Grove remains one of Miami’s most attractive, accessible and welcoming business districts.
