In 1891, five years before Miami became a city, Flora McFarlane and the women of Coconut Grove formed the Housekeeper’s club, now called the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove. As a woman homesteader and a teacher, Flora McFarlane was keenly aware of the isolation and loneliness of the pioneer women. She invited women in the community to take part in weekly gatherings. Flora stated that her goal was to bring together the housekeepers of our little settlement by spending two hours a week in companionship and study. For the women of the Club, some of whom had as many as ten children, the two-hour sewing sessions provided not only a respite, but also a welcome opportunity for adult conversation and fellowship. As legend has it, David Crosby was smitten with Joni Mitchell the moment he saw her onstage, in Coconut Grove, in the fall of 1967. All of 18 years old, Mitchell was a largely unknown art-folk troubadour at the time. The This ‘N That Shop, a project of Plymouth’s Women’s Fellowship, was inaugurated at its current location at 3155 Commodore Plaza in Coconut Grove in 1957. Plymouth women have always viewed the shop not only as income to distribute to local missions but as a service to those with limited resources. This beautiful house with a whimsical name dates to a quieter time. The Barnacle, built in 1891, offers a glimpse of Old Florida during The Era of the Bay. Situated on the shore of Biscayne Bay, this was the home of Ralph Middleton Munroe, one of Coconut Grove´s most charming and influential pioneers. Munroe’s principal passion was designing yachts. In his lifetime, he drew plans for 56 different sailboats. As a seaman, civic activist, naturalist, and photographer, Commodore Munroe was a man who cherished the natural world around him. A walk into the park passes through a tropical hardwood hammock. In the 1920s, it was representative of the original landscape within the city of Miami. Today, it is one of the last remnants of the once vast Miami Hammock. Enjoy sitting in the rocking chairs on the spacious porch used as a gathering place or on a bench under a tree for solitude.

But when the onsite dining restrictions came down, those restaurants struggled to survive. Many were forced to get creative and with the help of the Coconut Grove Business Improvement District (BID) they are now welcoming back their guests. “If you take a drive or a walk through Coconut Grove you will see that our outdoor dining is full,” said Abigael Mahony, with the Coconut Grove BID.
