L-R: Steven Hurwitz managing director with JLL, Michael A. Comras president and CEO of The Comras Company, and Mitash Kripalani, director investment services with Colliers International. When hype about real estate growth in a certain area gets to be too much, it’s time to look elsewhere. This seems to be how things go in real estate, and South Florida is no exception. This year big-name developers turned to somewhat forgotten and traditionally unexciting areas for new office and retail projects. And despite all the chatter about downtown redevelopment and population growth, it was the suburbs that boasted high multifamily rent growth and caught the eye of investors. The collective nod toward untapped markets will continue next year, meaning that’s where investment appetite will be, three real estate experts said. This t

Read moreIn 1891, five years before Miami became a city, Flora McFarlane and the women of Coconut Grove formed the Housekeeper’s club, now called the Woman’s Club of Coconut Grove. As a woman homesteader and a teacher, Flora McFarlane was keenly aware of the isolation and loneliness of the pioneer women. She invited women in the community to take part in weekly gatherings. Flora stated that her goal was to bring together the housekeepers of our little settlement by spending two hours a week in companionship and study. For the women of the Club, some of whom had as many as ten children, the two-hour sewing sessions provided not only a respite, but also a welcome opportunity for adult conversation and fellowship. Some of the women were well-traveled and educated. Others had little education, but possessed practical skills, common sense, and fortitude. By working together their pioneering spirit built a community. Their motto was “lend a hand.” 122 years later, that spirit remains. The Woman’s Clu
Read moreAs legend has it, David Crosby was smitten with Joni Mitchell the moment he saw her onstage, in Coconut Grove, in the fall of 1967. All of 18 years old, Mitchell was a largely unknown art-folk troubadour at the time. She had recently visited London’s fashionable Carnaby Street, and came to the Grove tricked out in false eyelashes and sequined belts. At the Gaslight, she’d play three sets a night, culminating in 1 a.m. concerts—the equivalent of 10 p.m. in sleepier towns. Photo by Vasilios Muselimis on Unsplash At the time, Crosby was in a career transition. He had been kicked out of the Byrds, and he moved to the Grove, in part, to purchase a sailboat. As Margaret Gallagher, a music producer and promoter who lived in the Grove for 12 years, and now resides in Delray Beach, remembers it, “Crosby had a huge sailing boat, a 60-foot ketch anchored in the Coconut Grove Marina. He immediately met Bobby [Ingram, another Grove folkie], and Bobby took him to the Gaslight. He said, ‘I want you t

A great neighborhood place. The answer was clearly an ice cream shop. Enter Tyler, her cousin who wanted in. But there was a catch: Neither had ever made ice cream before. Luckily, Tyler wasn’t afraid of his rookie status. He spent $16 on four used ice cream makers and got to work, spending hours endlessly testing flavor ideas in his own personal Wonka-verse (a.k.a., Kim’s basement). Meanwhile, Kim cashed in her savings and bought a cart. And then the two of them turned to their community, asking friends—chefs, chocolatiers, brewers and farmers—for advice, finding inspiration everywhere they looked. And that’s how Salt & Straw came to be. Our ice cream gives you a moment of happiness and connection to the community around you. If you ever stop believing in magic, eat some ice cream.

Read moreCoconut Grove, Miami’s bohemian beauty by the beach, is the Florida city’s oldest continuously inhabited neighborhood. Founded in 1873, it’s as intoxicating as its tropical-theme name. In the last three years, its residential and commercial markets have been undergoing a revitalization that has raised its profile. “Coconut Grove,” the 1967 tune by The Lovin’ Spoonful, where “nothin’ matters/No mad, mad world and no mad hatters,” sums up its leave-your-worries-behind-and-be-happy appeal. Coconut Grove is, indeed, the perfect place to go on permanent vacation: The lifestyle is laid back, the landscape is lush and the living is luxurious. Coconut Grove is bounded by North Prospect Drive on the south; Le Jeune Road on the west; the South Dixie Highway, which is U.S. 1, and Rickenbacker Causeway on the north; and Biscayne Bay on the east. That is no coincidence. The Coconut Grove BID worked with the City of Miami and came up with a pilot program to expand outdoor dining. “This allowed us to close the right of way for additional sidewalk seating, so we closed Fuller Street with permission of the county and the city,” said Mahony. The Coconut Grove BID is geared to promote business in the historic section of Miami. Funded in part by levies on local businesses, they have been busy during the pandemic with a number of
