From Canada to the Grove: Inside Chop Steakhouse at CocoWalk

When a beloved Canadian steakhouse chain plants its first U.S. flag in your neighborhood, it says something about the strength of the community. Tyler Jones, General Manager of Chop Steakhouse at CocoWalk, brings a hospitality-forward approach to this premium dining destination that’s already becoming a Grove staple. For Coconut Grove BID members, this conversation offers insight into how a new business is thinking about collaboration, contributing to the local dining scene, and investing in quality experiences that keep our neighborhood thriving.

Q. Let’s start with the big picture: what drew Chop Steakhouse to Coconut Grove for its first U.S. location?

Coconut Grove has a charm that’s hard to replicate, a vibrant mix of history, South Florida energy, and a community that loves to gather over great food and drinks. For our first U.S. location, we wanted a neighborhood that values both quality and connection, and the Grove felt like the perfect match. Being at CocoWalk gives us a prime stage to showcase the Chop experience to both locals and visitors.

Q. How does the Grove location put its own unique South Florida spin on the Chop tradition?

We’ve carried over premium ingredients, chef-driven recipes, and genuine hospitality, while infusing South Florida influence. That means incorporating fresh seafood, sourcing local American ingredients, adding bright citrus flavors, and sprinkling in Florida flair in the décor—like our staple flamingo art piece.

Q. As a GM, what’s your personal approach to creating a welcoming atmosphere?

For me, it’s all about warmth and attentiveness. I want guests to feel welcomed into a friend’s home, where every detail is cared for and every visit feels personal. I encourage my team to build moments, whether that’s remembering a returning guest’s favorite drink or going above and beyond while celebrating a special occasion.

Q. Do you see a sense of community among local businesses? How would you describe your relationship with the other businesses in the area and the Coconut Grove BID?

The Grove has a unique small-town energy within a big city, and local businesses here genuinely support one another. We want all neighboring restaurants and retailers to succeed, knowing that when the area thrives, we all do. It’s a collaborative environment.

Q. What do you love most about our neighborhood?

The walkability, the lush greenery, and the way the streets always seem alive with music, art, and conversation. One of my favorite moments since opening has been seeing regulars pop in after a day on the water or from nearby offices, there’s a beautiful mix of laid-back and sophisticated energy here.

Q. There’s way more to Chop than just dinner. How can patrons enjoy the space throughout the day?

We’ve designed Chop to be a place you can visit any time. Our weekend brunch has become a favorite for locals, with elevated takes on classics like eggs benedict and crème brûlée French toast. Happy hour offers shareable bites, craft cocktails, and wine specials. We also host group events and private dining, making it ideal for celebrations.

Q. If you had to pick, what’s your go-to order?

The Prime ribeye, perfectly marbled, with a beautiful char. I love pairing it with our black truffle butter, loaded mashed potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. For a cocktail, the Clase Azul Negroni is my pick. It’s smooth, complex, and perfectly balanced.

Q. How does the menu stand out from traditional steakhouses?

While we excel at steaks, our menu goes far beyond. Guests are often surprised by our fresh seafood options and globally inspired appetizers. A standout is the Miso Sea Bass, it’s buttery and flavorful, and keeps first-time guests coming back.

Q. How would you describe the look and feel of the space?

It’s modern, warm, and inviting. Think rich textures, ambient lighting, and a sophisticated space that feels both elevated and comfortable. Every detail, from the centerpiece bar to the covered wrap-around patio, is designed to create an atmosphere where guests want to linger.

Q. What do you hope people say after their first visit?

I hope they say, “I can’t wait to come back.” Whether it’s because of the food, the service, or the overall vibe, I want guests to leave feeling they’ve found their new go-to spot in the Grove.

Q. How does your team strike that balance between upscale and approachable?

We believe luxury isn’t about pretense, it’s about care. Our team delivers high-level service in a way that feels genuine and friendly, never stuffy. We serve premium ingredients in a relaxed, welcoming environment, making sure guests feel comfortable whether they’re here for brunch, date night, or happy hour.

Q. Lastly, we always like to ask, outside of the restaurant, what’s your passion in life?

I’m passionate about travel and exploring new culinary scenes. Experiencing different cultures, flavors, and hospitality styles keeps me inspired and I love bringing those ideas back to the team!
