County Moves Forward on Main Highway Project

UPDATED – JULY 18, 2025:

Residents and business owners in Coconut Grove got a detailed preview of the upcoming Main Highway resurfacing project during a virtual meeting hosted by Commissioner Raquel Regalado and her team, July 8. The initiative, which covers the stretch from McFarlane Road to Royal Road, aims to address long-standing pothole issues and significantly improve conditions for motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists alike.

Project Manager Frank Mendoza outlined a two-to-three-week timeline, which was slated to begin as early as July 14, with utility adjustments and milling operations starting on the southern portion near Ransom Everglades School. Milling—a process that involves removing old asphalt—will be followed by paving, road striping, and potential crosswalk enhancements.

The project is divided into two phases: first, the south end, followed by the more utility-heavy north end. Mendoza explained that daytime work is preferred to expedite the timeline and minimize disruptions, though evening hours may be used in busier areas like near the Coconut Grove Playhouse.

To keep the public informed, the team is deploying electronic Variable Message Signs (VMS) at both ends of the work zone and distributing fact sheets to nearby businesses and homes. Traffic flow will be carefully managed using flagmen or police officers, and work will be scheduled during periods of minimal traffic to reduce impact.

Two crosswalks are under consideration—one at Fuller Street, where new pedestrian activity is expected due to recent changes, and another near the Ransom Everglades chapel. Planning teams are expected to confirm designs shortly.

Commissioner Regalado emphasized the importance of getting the job done right. “This was long overdue,” she noted. “The potholes have been a persistent concern, and we’re committed to delivering a high-quality, lasting fix.”

The total project cost is estimated at $300,000.

UPDATED JULY 8, 2025

Miami-Dade County has launched a major roadway resurfacing project to improve driving conditions and pedestrian accessibility along a key stretch of Main Highway in the heart of Coconut Grove, within County District 7.

Led by the Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW), the project includes milling and resurfacing, adjustments to valve boxes and manholes, installation of ADA-compliant ramps and connectors, and the addition of new pavement markings and signage. The project is expected to commence July 9, 2025, and be completed by October 2025, barring delays caused by labor shortages, material availability, or inclement weather during hurricane season

As part of the first phase of the project, vehicle access along Main Highway in the Central Grove District will be impacted starting July 9. During this initial phase, vehicle access may be temporarily restricted between McFarlane Road and Royal Road, though milled/unpaved areas will remain open to vehicles over the weekend. Temporary closures of side streets and residential driveways may last up to 30 minutes, but pedestrian and bicycle access to sidewalks will remain unaffected.

DTPW officials stated all efforts are being made to minimize disruptions to residents, businesses, schools, and motorists, and any impacted areas—such as grassy strips or landscaping—will be fully restored upon completion.

To stay informed, project fact sheets (i.e., below) are being distributed to affected businesses and property owners. For further updates or questions, contact DTPW at 305-375-2810 or email DTPWOutreach@miamidade.gov.
